Data centers in Washington County, Pennsylvania: 3 projects mapped

Washington County produces more natural gas than any other county in Pennsylvania, and three proposed data center campuses here would burn that gas on-site rather than draw from the power grid. The furthest along is Prime Data Centers' plan for seven buildings, about 1.8 million square feet, on reclaimed strip-mine land at the Starpointe Business Park near Burgettstown, with a 350-megawatt gas plant fed by a lateral off the Rover Pipeline. Hanover Township supervisors have held four hearings on Prime's conditional-use permit since August, most recently on Sept. 21 and 24, and have not yet decided; two more sessions are set for Sept. 29 and 30 at the township fire hall.

More than 200 people have packed each hearing. "I'm worried about the health issues that can come from this, the noise," said Barbara Minges Sheperd, who lives across the street. "I'm so close. It's scaring me." Prime says the plant will be independent of the grid and hopes to start construction in early 2027, creating 40 to 60 permanent jobs. Hanover adopted a data center ordinance in March, two months before Prime applied.

CNX Resources is marketing a second site, the roughly 400-acre Zediker Station property in South Strabane Township, for 500 to 700 megawatts of on-site generation; the township adopted rules in June 2026 requiring a 1,500-foot setback from homes, but CNX has not filed an application there. In Robinson Township, Liberty Energy, Imperial Land Corporation and Range Resources are developing a gas plant at the Fort Cherry Development District to serve data centers, with no capacity or timeline disclosed. Gov. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order in August requiring data center permits to go through normal state review only after developers get local approval.
