Two data center campuses tied to Talen Energy's power plants are proposed in neighboring townships in Northampton County's Slate Belt. The larger, the Lower Mount Bethel Tech Center from Peron Development, J.G. Petrucci Company and Talen, sits next to Talen's Martins Creek and Lower Mount Bethel power plants; developers describe a 1.2-gigawatt, more-than-$5 billion project. After resident pushback the team filed a revised plan in August 2026 that drops about 350 farmed acres and now seeks to rezone about 239 acres, including farmland and quarry land, saying closed-loop cooling would use neither groundwater nor Delaware River water. Lower Mount Bethel's supervisors have adopted their own data center ordinance.

At a town hall, of about three dozen speakers WFMZ counted none in support. "We do not want to be Bethlehem. We do not want to be Forks Township," said resident Marge Holmes. Developer John Callahan, a former Bethlehem mayor, told residents electricity bills "will not go up," and the team estimated $7 million to $8 million a year in township tax revenue against current revenue of $550,000.

Next door in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Slate Belt Holdings, a partnership of Talen and River Pointe Logistics, bought about 754 acres for a planned 23-building campus with a possible 2 gigawatts of power. After the developer offered $50 million in donations in exchange for a by-right zoning change, supervisors instead voted 3-1 for their own ordinance making data centers a conditional use, requiring disclosure of total power demand and cutting the height limit to 45 feet. On August 24, 2026 the board voted 3-2 to keep negotiating rather than abandon talks, while directing its solicitor to fight the developer's legal challenge to the township's zoning. "Can we keep them out? I don't know," board chair John Bermingham said. "Can we regulate them? Yes, and that's where we're at."

The county's only operating site, TierPoint's Bethlehem data center, has not disclosed its power use.
