Data centers in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania: 6 projects mapped
Much of Montgomery County's data center fight has been over one developer. Brian O'Neill's King of Prussia firm MLP Ventures filed plans for five data center sites in Upper Merion Township, on Renaissance Boulevard, Horizon Drive, Swedeland Road and River Road, totaling more than 4.5 million square feet, days before the township passed a data center ordinance setting conditional use requirements and a 1,000-foot buffer from homes. On August 13, 2026 the Board of Supervisors denied the extensions and preliminary plans for all five. "20,000 residents signed a petition opposing this development," said County Commissioner Neil Makhija. O'Neill said he would appeal; MLP had already sued the township.
In Limerick Township, on vacant land between a shopping center and the nuclear power plant, MDC 7 LLC's Project Laurel would put eight 85-foot buildings, close to 3 million square feet, on about 190 acres; officials say it would draw roughly 750 megawatts of power and use at least 750,000 gallons of water a day. Two longtime neighbors interviewed by WFMZ were relaxed about it; one said he had not really cared until "they start offering big money."

The county's three operating sites are DaSTOR's 4-megawatt Upper Merion Township facility, Flexential's 7-megawatt Collegeville data center, and TierPoint's Valley Forge site in Norristown, which has not reported its power use. A separate, smaller project in Plymouth Township is listed as proposed with no developer named yet.
On August 18, 2026 Governor Josh Shapiro signed an executive order requiring data center developers to show proof of local approvals before they can get state permits, a move that could affect O'Neill's appeal of the Upper Merion denial.
