Data centers in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania: 2 projects mapped
Amazon Web Services is the biggest name in Schuylkill County. In 2025 it paid $178 million for about 346 acres on Lofty Road in Kline Township, between Interstate 81 and Route 309, land already approved for a warehouse. By June 2026 the plan was nine two-story buildings totaling about 2.2 million square feet, with the first unlikely to open before 2028. AWS holds a will-serve letter for 15,000 gallons a day of domestic water and up to 100,000 gallons a day of cooling water, and says the buildings would be cooled by outside air 96% of the year. The company's land development plan went before the Kline Township Planning Commission on July 1, 2026; no outcome has been reported since.
AWS economic development director Becky Ford said the company designed the campus to fit "within what was already approved and zoned," though some permits are still outstanding, and said AWS would pay for the power lines and substation the site needs. When a county commissioner asked how loud the campus would be, she could not give a figure; the company's attorney said the industrial zoning there allows 60 to 70 decibels.

The sharpest local fight is outside Frackville, where KRNL Data Centers paid $600,000 for land near the Schuylkill Technology Center. In May 2026, during a 180-day moratorium, New Castle Township supervisors voted 2-0 to create a zone along I-81 where data centers are allowed with 200-foot setbacks and required studies. The zone sits about 3.5 miles from the nearest New Castle home but backs onto houses in Frackville and Butler Township. "You make this decision, you don't live beside it," resident Bobbie Cicioni told supervisors. No formal KRNL application had been filed with the township as of the vote.
County commissioners chair Larry Padora Jr. has also introduced a draft plan that would require big power users to pay for grid upgrades and steer projects toward old mine land, and would rule out tax breaks for data centers; it has not yet gone to a public hearing.
