Hunt County's commissioners learned about the county's first AI data center from a press release. On March 4, 2026, Core Scientific, a former bitcoin miner moving into AI hosting, announced it had acquired a 265-acre site for a campus of 285 megawatts of leasable capacity, energizing from 2027 and at full power by 2029. "Core Scientific has not contacted anyone in the County prior to or since the release," Commissioner Garry Smith wrote days later. The land sits in the Wieland community about two miles east of Cash, not Quinlan, though county records list its mailing address under Quinlan.
The county's problem is it has almost no say: Texas law lets counties regulate little beyond subdivision, road access and drainage, and Greenville council member Ben Collins said the county has "NONE" of the authority it needs. A second developer has asked about a site north of Quinlan, and Giga Energy's BT Gateway Data Center is separately planned on about 30 acres outside Royse City, with a two-acre main building for AI computing due by mid-2027. This spring commissioners asked Gov. Greg Abbott for an immediate pause on data center construction until statewide rules exist. "We have very little ammunition ... but we're doing what we can," said County Judge Bobby Stovall.
At a town hall in the Lone Oak High School cafeteria in May, Core Scientific said the campus would use less than 6,750 gallons of water a day, cool its chips in a closed loop, pay its own energy costs and seek no tax incentives. Some of its own figures did not hold up: posters projected $135 million a year in tax revenue for the city of Quinlan, though the site is nowhere near Quinlan's city limits and lies almost entirely in the Lone Oak school district. "Our community ... the farmers, the farmland, the cattle, everything that we hold dear ... is what's going to be affected," Greenville resident Marsha Kuykendall told commissioners.
