Data centers in Wyoming: 6 projects mapped
Most of Wyoming's data centers are around Cheyenne in Laramie County, where Meta and Related Digital are building and Microsoft runs a campus. New proposals are spreading to ranchland elsewhere: on September 2 Platte County commissioners unanimously rezoned 5,344 acres in Goshen Hole, northeast of Wheatland, for Site Layer 4's planned $26 billion data center and power complex, and Prometheus Hyperscale has pitched a 1.5-gigawatt campus on 940 acres south of Interstate 25 near Casper, in Natrona County.
Platte County attached conditions, including that the land reverts to its old zoning if construction does not start within five years. "It looks like a huge rezone that nobody knows anything about," Commissioner Ian Jolovich said before voting yes. Near Casper, neighbors object to plans for hundreds of gas generators and millions of gallons of backup diesel; Natrona County says it has not received an application, and any proposal would face months of review and public hearings.

In Cheyenne, the City Council voted 8-1 against a one-year moratorium in May after union tradespeople argued for the jobs. "Until Meta ramped up and brought all of us home, all of these guys ... were in a completely other state," said pipefitter Matthew Miles. In June, city water officials traced a dangerous bacterium in Cheyenne's recycled-water irrigation system to a contractor for a Meta data center and cut off its discharge; Meta has appealed the violation notice.
The Legislature's Revenue Committee declined in September to move data centers into the higher industrial property tax class, 11.5% instead of 9.5%, and plans to take up the question again at its next meeting on November 19.
