Amazon Web Services plans a data center in La Cartuja Baja, on the edge of Zaragoza in Aragon, Spain. In June 2026 Spain's grid operator authorized the project's electrical connection, one of the last steps before construction can begin, Data Center Dynamics reported.
AWS already runs data centers elsewhere in Aragon, at El Burgo de Ebro, Villanueva de Gallego and Huesca, and the La Cartuja site is part of the company's wider expansion in the region. Grid connections have become one of the biggest obstacles for new data centers in Spain, especially in Aragon, where so many projects have strained the available capacity.
Aragon has become one of southern Europe's biggest data center markets, and AWS plans to spend tens of billions of euros there over the next decade. Construction can go ahead now that the connection is authorized, though AWS has not said when it will start.
