AWS Laveen (Phoenix) data center, Phoenix, Arizona

Amazon Data Services paid $277 million for 220 acres near Loop 202 and Dobbins Road in Laveen, in southwest Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona, as a potential data center site. The deal closed in October 2024; an AWS spokesperson said only that the company was "constantly evaluating new locations based on customer demand," with no data center plans announced since.

Amazon paid more than $1.2 million an acre, according to land records and the Tempe real estate database Vizzda. The seller, IDM Companies, had assembled the site for about $100.9 million, and the land sits in an industrial corridor the city wants to build into a technology center.

Salt River Project is adding power to the corridor through its South Mountain Transmission Project, a new substation and transmission lines that a state siting committee cleared in December 2024. Since July 2, 2025, Phoenix has required a special permit for any data center, reviewing grid reliability, fire risk, emergency access and noise before construction can begin.

Any data center AWS builds on the Laveen land would need that permit from the City of Phoenix. Mayor Kate Gallego said growth "must be balanced and not ignore public safety or potentially negative impacts upon the community." AWS has shared no plans for the site since the 2024 purchase.
