Data centers in Maricopa County, Arizona: 39 projects mapped

Project Baccara, a data center campus with its own 700-megawatt gas power plant, is planned on 160 acres about a mile north of Luke Air Force Base in Maricopa County, near Glendale and Surprise. On May 6 the Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to give it the military compatibility permit it needed, with Steve Gallardo voting no. The developer is Takanock, a Michigan-based data center firm. The site is unincorporated county land, and Glendale has voted to begin annexing it.

The plan would put two data centers and the gas plant about 400 feet from about a dozen homes. The county received 553 emails against it, more than 8,000 petition signatures and five emails in support. "Why would anybody think this would be a good site, so close to homes, so close to the end of a runway," said April Butler, whose family has lived in Surprise for six generations. The developer's lawyer told the board its chief executive had accepted all of the Air Force's conditions in writing.

Baccara is one of 71 data center campuses planned or running in the county, the Arizona Republic counted. The largest running today include Stream Data Centers' 157-acre campus in Goodyear, with 280 megawatts of capacity and two of seven buildings finished.
