Tract data centers: 17 sites mapped

Tract gets large sites ready for data centers: it rezones the land, builds roads, grades pads and brings in water, sewer and power, then sells or leases the land to the companies that build the data centers. It says it holds more than 20,000 acres in ten markets. Its founder, Grant van Rooyen, previously ran the data center company Cologix. Its newest proposal is the Haven Oak Technology Park on nearly 1,000 acres at White Oak Road and Claiborne Road in Dinwiddie County, Virginia.

At a meeting on September 22, residents asked about their wells and a Civil War battlefield on the site. Tract said it would keep buildings off the battlefield and use closed-loop cooling, cutting estimated water use by 96 to 97 percent. In July it showed Goochland County a 900-megawatt plan on 870 acres next to Mosaic, a neighborhood of more than 500 homes for people over 55. "We want to make sure that everyone understands that we don't want data centers in Goochland," resident Cynthia Haas said.

Hanover County supervisors rejected Tract's 900-megawatt Mountain Road Technology Park on 430 acres by one vote on May 27. In Arizona it withdrew a $14 billion, 1,000-acre complex near Buckeye after objections from Buckeye and Goodyear city staff. In Nevada, NV Energy has sued Tract, saying it is using private arbitration to settle its power arrangements out of regulators' sight. On September 17 state regulators approved two gas plants to run Tract's sites at the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center until the utility can connect them.
