AWS Loisdale Station data center, Springfield, Virginia

Amazon Web Services is building a data center on Loisdale Road in southern Springfield, Fairfax County, Virginia, on the site of two office buildings demolished in June 2023. AWS is building a two-story, 120,000-square-foot data center on the 17.5-acre site, next to the Loisdale Estates and Newington neighborhoods.

By March 2024 the Connection reported the first building was up near the Loisdale Road and Newington Road intersection, with more land being cleared on 23 acres in the Springfield Planning District, and no completion date was given. AWS said it has invested more than $51.9 billion in Virginia data centers and paid $334 million in personal property taxes in 2022.

Fairfax County tightened its data center rules on September 10, 2024, requiring a 200-foot setback from homes, a noise study, and keeping new data centers out of a one-mile radius around Metro stations, though it grandfathered applications already filed. Springfield Supervisor Pat Herrity said data centers must be "properly located and screened to reduce the impact on our residents."

The first building was up by March 2024, and any further construction on the site now falls under the county's 2024 rules unless it was already grandfathered. No newspaper account since March 2024 has said whether the project is finished.
