AWS Project Spectrum (Hood County) data center, Granbury, Texas

Amazon Web Services has withdrawn Project Spectrum, its planned 21-building data center campus at 2300 Coates Road near Granbury in Hood County, Texas, telling 60 Minutes before its September 20, 2026 broadcast: "We ultimately decided to not build in Hood County, and we received no incentives from the county." Hood County commissioners had approved the project 3-0 on May 26, 2026; 60 Minutes reported the project is now moving forward in a neighboring county that gave AWS the tax rebate it wanted, without naming which county.

Amazon had asked Hood County for up to 90% in property tax rebates for 30 years, according to a pitch obtained by 60 Minutes. "They basically came in here to razzle dazzle me," said Commissioner Dave Eagle, who voted against the project and said company representatives would not say exactly what they wanted to do. The land was unzoned, undeveloped agricultural property, and plans from Bohler Engineering showed the campus drawing electricity from the nearby Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant.

The May vote was contested: commissioners had set conditions in January requiring a drainage plan, traffic assessments, an endangered species report and water-use information, then found in May that Amazon had met them, with two commissioners absent. "That is our position. We are exempt from your regulations, with all due respect," Amazon's attorney, Jonathan Vinson of Jackson Walker, told the commissioners.

Statewide, Gov. Greg Abbott ordered a moratorium on new data center grid connections on August 3, 2026, pending an ERCOT audit, and his Democratic opponent in November, Gina Hinojosa, is calling for her own temporary moratorium. With Amazon gone, no application is pending before the Hood County Commissioners Court; the county's development commission was still weighing its own moratorium on industrial development as of a May 28, 2026 meeting.
