Data centers in Hood County, Texas: 3 projects mapped
Hood County, a rural county of 62,000 people southwest of Fort Worth, has had eight data centers proposed across more than 7,600 acres, the Texas Tribune reported. The largest is Comanche Circle, a 2,100-acre campus near Tolar from Sailfish Investors, which commissioners approved without conditions on June 9, 2026, after twice rejecting a moratorium. Two smaller sites in Granbury are further along: MARA Holdings' Bitcoin mine is running, and Amazon's Project Spectrum, conditionally approved in January, has since been withdrawn.
Residents asked commissioners to pause new development for six months to study water, energy and wildlife impacts; the court said no twice in February 2026, both times 3-2, after the county attorney revealed a letter from state Sen. Paul Bettencourt warning that counties have no authority to impose moratoriums. "You've got to wonder what kind of backroom stuff was going on," said Commissioner Dave Eagle. The court instead asked Attorney General Ken Paxton for an opinion; County Attorney Matt Mills said by June it might not come until after the November election.

The county has also been sued twice by developers: once after it rejected a data center's concept plan for lacking information on its water source, and once after it tabled a vote on another. Comanche Circle won conditional approval in January, and its founder Ryan Hughes threatened to sue if the county did not grant unconditional approval; commissioners did so 3-1 on June 9. "Ryan Hughes is telling this court to pound sand," said Brian Crawford, whose family's garden sits about 600 yards from where the campus would stand.
The county's operating site, MARA's Bitcoin mine in Granbury, has its own long-running noise fight. In November 2025 nearby residents tried to incorporate their community as the city of Mitchell Bend so they could pass a noise ordinance; voters rejected the measure 62% to 38%. "We are going to move forward and we will continue to do what we can to not let industry take over Hood County," said resident Danny Lakey, who lives half a mile from the mine. MARA called the incorporation bid a "sham."
