Bolingbroke Technology Campus data center, Macon, Georgia

Monroe County commissioners unanimously rejected the Bolingbroke Technology Campus on August 5, 2025, refusing to rezone about 970 acres of forest near the unincorporated community of Bolingbroke, in Monroe County, Georgia, for a data center. Bolingbroke Technology Center LLC had proposed nine buildings totaling 5.4 million square feet along US Highway 41, Wadley Road and Interstate 475, about 15 miles northwest of Macon, at a cost of $5.8 billion.

The county's planning and zoning board had already voted 5 to 0 against the rezoning on July 28, 2025, pointing mainly to predicted noise levels, while hundreds of residents packed the hearing in "Say No To Rezoning" T-shirts. Opponents cited cleared forest, the Ocmulgee skullcap and tricolored bats on the land, and a power demand they compared to adding a city the size of San Jose. "While we are disappointed by the board's recommendation, we remain confident that the Board of Commissioners will make a fact-based decision about the positive impacts this project offers," said Ben Sheidler, speaking for Bolingbroke Technology.

Supporters pointed to about $60 million a year in taxes and 200 to 250 jobs, in a county whose biggest taxpayer, Georgia Power's Plant Scherer, is due to close within a decade. The landowners said after the vote: "This project is a thoughtful, community-driven proposal designed to bring meaningful long-term benefits to Monroe County."

Henry Davis Properties, LLC, and other landowners sued Monroe County in Monroe County Superior Court on September 3, 2025, arguing the county's development ordinance was never properly adopted and that commissioners had no rational basis for approving a rival data center on Rumble Road the same night while refusing this one. No trial date has been set, and no ruling has been published since the suit was filed.
