CoreWeave Dalton 1 & 2 data center, Dalton, Georgia

Core Scientific's data center at 2205 Industrial South Road in Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia, is operating in a 52,000 square foot building on 5 acres, where Core Scientific advertises up to 50 megawatts of computing capacity leased to its AI cloud tenant CoreWeave. It is one of several data centers Core Scientific runs in and around Dalton, growth that residents have spent 2026 asking the county to slow.

Dozens of residents gathered outside the Whitfield County Courthouse before commissioners' regular meeting on Monday, June 8, 2026, to protest what they called unchecked data center growth. "We're asking for a two-year planning moratorium on accepting any future applications and making any future development approvals, until those strategic plans can be developed based on research, study, and best practices across the country," said Carmen Shuler, a Dalton resident who spoke for the group. Dalton City Commissioner Dennis Mock told the board the county's tax digest was so far out of line that "we in the city don't know where our money's coming from or how much we're getting."

In a separate report in July 2026, resident and state House candidate Quentin Postell said, "With Dalton now having an AI center put in the city, we want to make sure that the next one isn't allowed, or if we can kind of create a moratorium." Whitfield County Administrator Bob Sivick told the same outlet the board saw no need for a moratorium because "there's nothing in the works, and there hasn't been any problems with data centers here either in the construction or their operation." Dalton Utilities' peak electricity load has nearly doubled since data centers arrived, from about 250 megawatts to 476 megawatts, Chief Operating Officer Mark Buckner told the League of Women Voters of the Dalton Area in May 2026.

The Dalton-Whitfield Joint Development Authority voted in September 2025 to approve tax abatements tied to a roughly $200 million Core Scientific investment on Old Tilton Road, a separate project nearby. CoreWeave agreed in July 2025 to buy Core Scientific, but shareholders voted the deal down and it was terminated on October 30, 2025.
