Data centers in Whitfield County, Georgia: 3 projects mapped
Dalton and Whitfield County have hosted Core Scientific since 2018, when the joint development authority approved $42 million in bonds for what was then called a "technology facility." Two Dalton sites, now serving the AI cloud company CoreWeave, report a combined 170 megawatts and are operating. A third, larger site is under construction nearby: Dalton 4, a 250,000-square-foot building on 170 acres on Old Tilton Road, rezoned from agricultural land in March 2025, that Core Scientific had targeted to open by July 2026; that date has passed with no opening announced.
The state Environmental Protection Division is reviewing a permit for up to 80 diesel backup generators at Dalton 4, compared with eight at the older Industrial South Road site. Money keeps growing alongside it: the county court validated about $1.49 billion in Core Scientific and CoreWeave bonds in October 2025, and in June 2026 a judge was asked to validate $15.2 billion more, including $13.1 billion in equipment financing for CoreWeave Dalton II. The bonds are not taxpayer-backed, but they cut the projects' property taxes under Georgia's development authority lease structure.

Some residents want a moratorium, as neighboring Walker County and Calhoun have adopted. "With Dalton now having an AI center put in the city, we want to make sure that the next one isn't allowed," said Quentin Postell, a candidate for state House. County Administrator Bob Sivick said in July the board saw no need for one "because there's nothing in the works, and there hasn't been any problems with data centers here either in the construction or their operation."
A separate, unrelated small data center on South Thornton Avenue near downtown Dalton, on record from a commercial property listing, has no connection to the Core Scientific sites.
