Gigaland Remington Data Center, Remington, Virginia

Gigaland bought 202 acres near Remington, in Fauquier County, Virginia, for $4 million in October 2023, and sought to rezone the land from residential use to business park for an 800-megawatt, 2.2 million-square-foot data center campus.

On June 18, 2025 the Fauquier County planning commission voted 4 to 1 to recommend refusing it. The Piedmont Environmental Council, which called it a seven-building, 2.2-million-square-foot campus, said the applicant promised water quality improvements even though the county water system already meets state and federal standards, and that the project would be one of four data centers proposed in the Lee District.

The council also said the company actually behind Gigaland had never been publicly identified and would neither name itself nor provide proof it was more than a speculative real estate plan. The application included four substations, more than the council said appeared necessary, raising questions about where new transmission lines would cross private land. After losing the vote, the developers added a $15 million proffer to the county's Purchase of Development Rights program for farmland conservation.

Two weeks before a September 2025 vote by the Board of Supervisors, the developers withdrew the 2024 application. Co-founder Art Lickunas said a new plan would shrink the campus to 847,400 square feet of one-story buildings with two substations instead of four. County officials assumed Equinix would be the end user, and Lickunas said half the site would be "more retail oriented, and the other will be more hyper scale operations."

The Piedmont Environmental Council said even a scaled-down proposal leaves "the fundamental issues with data centers" in place, citing impacts on the county's air, water, land and historic resources. The revised application fared no better: in July 2026 the planning commission again recommended denial, 4 to 1, with commissioners citing harm to quality of life and arguing that the main benefit would be tax revenue.

On August 17, 2026 Lickunas asked the county to "remove all four items from the September 10, 2026 Board of Supervisors agenda." Assistant community development director Adam Shellenberger said "there will be no further action" on the applications. "I do not know what their plans for the property are," Shellenberger said; any new proposal would have to go through the planning commission and the Board of Supervisors again.
