The Remington Innovation Campus, a six-building data center campus proposed on about 210 acres at Remington in Fauquier County, Virginia, was withdrawn on September 17, 2026, hours before the county Planning Commission was to consider it. The project was bankrolled by SDC Capital Partners of New York, and one of the landowners behind the application is Lee District Supervisor Daron Culbertson.

At 7:16 that morning Ron Meyer, a former Loudoun County supervisor who is senior vice president of development at SDC Capital Partners, emailed the county asking to make the application inactive or, if not, withdraw it. The county has no inactive status, so it was withdrawn. Meyer declined to comment, and Culbertson did not respond.

The application asked the county to add the 210.7-acre property to the Remington Service District, rezone about 182 acres from residential to business park, and allow three substations. When it was filed in May 2025, the plan showed copper-colored, barn-style buildings set back 250 feet from Remington Road, a 27-acre park, three substations and cooling with recycled water, and asked for a waiver to exceed the 45-foot height limit.

The site sits near 230kV transmission lines, the Remington Power Station and the Remington Solar Power Facility. County staff flagged ponds, wetlands and floodplain on several parcels, and the site overlaps the Rappahannock Station I and II Civil War battlefields. County preservation planner Wendy Wheatcraft said it could have an adverse impact on historic resources.

The application covered 11 parcels, including a 44.82-acre parcel at 11462 Remington Road that county records show Culbertson co-owns, and land owned by his sister and mother. Culbertson said the land had been under contract since December 2024. Residents called on him to step aside from data center votes. "You should recuse yourself from all data center votes, not just the one for your property," Denise Schefer of Protect Fauquier told the board in June 2025.

Jeanne Ritchie, whose family farms near Remington, called his position "entirely unethical and a conflict of interest." Culbertson apologized "to any of the voters that felt like I misled them" and said: "My obligation has always been to the Lee District and the Remington community." In July 2026 he voted with the majority to allow a private natural gas fuel cell plant for the nearby Remington Technology Park.

The withdrawal was the third for a major Remington data center in a month. Gigaland pulled its application for the second time on August 17, and Convergent VA dropped its Convergent Technology Park in late August to build houses on the land. "They've known for more than a year that they had no chance of approval for a data center," Supervisor Ike Broaddus said of Convergent. The approved but unbuilt Remington Technology Park nearby remains approved, and in July won permission for its own fuel cell power plant.

The same evening the Innovation Campus was to be heard, the Planning Commission unanimously recommended a zoning change that would limit new data centers to land zoned for planned commercial industrial development, now only the Vint Hill area, and require every data center to get a special exception from the Board of Supervisors. Staff concluded there are "no appropriate areas for data center development" outside that zone. If the Board of Supervisors adopts it, a new application for this land would face those rules.
