ONMINE Data Center, Killeen, Texas

OnMine's planned data center in south Killeen, Bell County, Texas, will not be built. The company withdrew its rezoning request for 2.6 acres at 6509 South Fort Hood Street in May 2026, before a Killeen City Council vote set for June 2 that would have needed a supermajority of six votes to pass.

The Killeen Planning and Zoning Commission had recommended disapproval in April, after nearly 30 residents raised concerns about noise, water and electricity use; the company said its closed-loop cooling system would use less water. OnMine described its plan as "high-density computational research, AI-driven grid balancing and the operation of a Virtual Power Plant," and city officials asked to call it a "computing and energy research annex" instead of a data center.

Five new council members, several of whom had campaigned against data centers, took office after a May 2 election, and incoming Mayor Joseph Solomon said during his campaign he would find it hard to support a project that "doesn't generate meaningful jobs or significantly enhance our economy." Councilman Anthony Kendrick said the applicant made a good decision to withdraw until the public is better educated about data centers: "There was a lot of misinformation out there in reference to data centers. We've got to do some forums and give them the information that they need so everyone understands."
