Prime Storage Data Center, Marietta, Georgia

Prime Storage Powers Ferry Place Marietta, LLC filed to turn part of a self-storage site at 1155 Powers Ferry Place in Marietta, the county seat of Cobb County, Georgia, into an 18 megawatt data center. The Marietta City Council approved it 5 to 2 on 12 August 2026, a month after adopting a six month moratorium on new data centers, because the application was filed before the freeze took effect.

The 10.7 acre site holds a one-story concrete building, a 100,000 square foot Pace Warehouse store converted to storage in 1996, and rows of outdoor storage units. About 40 percent of the building would become data center space, around 21,570 square feet of white space and 15,365 of grey space, while the rest stays in storage and most of the outdoor rows come down for an equipment yard with enclosures meant to cut noise and a closed loop air cooled system. Prime Group Holdings, which owns hundreds of storage sites, lists the building as GA10 on its edge computing website, with service possible as soon as the third quarter of 2026.

The application went in on 19 May 2026, and the planning commission recommended it by 4 votes to 3. City staff found it did not fit the comprehensive plan and lacked detail on how heat would be managed. Jean Allred of Marietta Blue Ladies United said the group wanted "a moratorium until the energy drain, the pollution and the environmental concerns can be addressed and regulations put into place." State Rep. Gabriel Sanchez said: "There's better uses of the very limited resources the city has for the data center projects."

On 8 July 2026 the council tabled the vote 7 to 0 until August, and Councilwoman Cheryl Richardson said she wanted to consult a sound engineer first. Prime Storage offered a closed loop water system, sound barriers, enclosed generators, a 10 foot fence and limits of 60 decibels by day and 50 at night. Former NFL player Chris Conley listed the risks as "air pollution, noise pollution, water contamination, water storage, rising electricity rates."

At the August vote Richardson and Daniel Gaddis were the two against. State Rep. Mary Frances Williams told the council: "I've read the most recent submission letter outlining more details about the proposed project, and I continue to have concerns that, in my opinion, have not been fully answered." The Cobb Chamber of Commerce backed the plan, saying "Data centers are an important opportunity to strengthen and future-proof our local economy." Residents raised noise and pollution of Rottenwood Creek, and about 2.5% of the property lies in the creek's floodplain. The chamber was full, people shouted "shame" after the vote, and police escorted some protesters out.
