CleanSpark, a bitcoin miner moving into AI data centers, is building two large sites in Texas over local opposition. In Austin County, near Sealy, it plans a 285-megawatt data center on about 270 acres; in Brazoria County, south of Houston, a site that would start at 300 megawatts and could grow to 600. Both are proposed, with construction not yet begun. In Georgia, CleanSpark already operates a growing 175-megawatt data center in Sandersville under a 20-year lease with an unnamed tenant.
On August 14, 2026, dozens of Austin County residents drove tractors and trucks to a CleanSpark community meeting near Trenckmann Road and FM 949 to protest the Sealy site, citing water, noise, light and wildlife concerns. "We are not going to lay down and take it. We are here to fight," resident Lisa Hicks said. CleanSpark said it would build its own substation, pay for grid upgrades, and use closed-loop cooling. On July 27, 2026, Austin County commissioners voted unanimously for a moratorium on data centers and battery storage systems, covering all such projects, not just CleanSpark's.
In Brazoria County, commissioners voted unanimously in June 2026 for a resolution opposing any future data center that does not protect grid reliability, water, farmland and public infrastructure; it is not a ban, and County Judge L.M. "Matt" Sebesta Jr. said it carries little real force without state action. Two days before the Sealy protest, Governor Greg Abbott said CleanSpark, Google and Rowan had agreed to comply with state data center standards requiring disclosure of power, water and incentive details to regulators.
CleanSpark has operated in Sandersville, Georgia, since 2022. Its July 2026 lease there covers 175 megawatts of IT capacity and could bring $6.6 billion in revenue over the term; the same tenant signed a letter of intent covering CleanSpark's 718-acre, 885-megawatt Texas portfolio. CleanSpark has described the tenant only as a "high investment-grade, leading global technology company" and has not named it in the sources used for this page.
