Data centers in DuPage County, Illinois: 6 projects mapped

DuPage County's western suburbs, along the I-88 corridor, have become one of the places where the Chicago data center boom has been turned back. In January 2026 the Naperville City Council voted 6-1 to reject Karis Critical's data center near Naperville and Warrenville roads. The Naples, Florida developer had already cut the plan to about 145,000 square feet, capped at 36 megawatts, and reduced its diesel generators from 24 to 16. Council member Supna Jain said neither ComEd's system nor the city's own electric utility had unlimited capacity; Ian Holzhauer said the land might serve Naperville better as housing. Mayor Scott Wehrli, who wanted to delay the vote, abstained. "All the neighbors have been exhausted by this process," said nearby resident James Butt. "I know that everyone is relieved." Karis has not given up on the city: by June 2026 it was eyeing a second, 168-acre site nearby at 150 West Warrenville Road, the former BP campus, an early-stage proposal with no capacity announced yet.

In Lisle, CloudCenters LLC proposed a 256,000-square-foot data center on the former Lockformer site at 711 Ogden Avenue, a property left contaminated with trichloroethylene that leaked into local groundwater. "A lot of people were sick, and a lot of people passed away in Lisle when Lockformer was first initially contaminated," said Mayor Mary Jo Mullen, who also noted redevelopment would offset residential property taxes. "I'm not anti-data center. I'm anti data centers right next to residential areas," said neighbor Vanessa Berry. The January hearing was cancelled when the crowd overflowed the rooms, and the developer then withdrew. The village board has since moved to remove data centers as a permitted use in its industrial district, which would effectively bar new ones without a separate zoning amendment; no one spoke against the change at its May 20 hearing.

Aurora, which lies partly in DuPage, already has data centers operating, including CyrusOne's 114-megawatt campus, and five more in development; nearby in Itasca, NTT Global Data Centers separately runs a large campus of its own. After a 180-day moratorium, Aurora's council passed new rules in March 2026 lowering noise limits, requiring sound studies and resource consumption reports, and making every new data center go to the council for approval. "We're trying to put regulations in place to help data centers that want to come here understand that we want them to be responsible neighbors," said Alison Lindburg, the city's sustainability director.
