Data centers in Porter County, Indiana: 4 projects mapped
Porter County sits on Lake Michigan's shore on Chicago's eastern edge, and developers have tried at least four data center sites here since 2024. None has been approved. The most recent, a $2 billion QTS campus proposed for 800 acres in Union Township near Wheeler High School, was withdrawn in September 2025 after hundreds of residents packed a public meeting, many wearing "County, not corporate" shirts.
Three earlier attempts also collapsed. Provident Realty Advisors withdrew a $1.3 billion Chesterton campus in June 2024 after residents warned about water, wildlife and home values, then dropped a similar plan for neighboring Burns Harbor months later when its proposed 120-foot buildings drew objections. Agincourt Investments gave up its option on Valparaiso farmland in March 2025 after a standing-room council meeting.
Portage and Valparaiso have since written rules for the next proposal. On August 4, 2026, Portage's council voted to allow data centers only in a new Technology Park zone, with a 55-decibel noise cap and a 65-foot height limit; Mayor Austin Bonta said an outright ban would probably lose in court. Valparaiso's council passed a moratorium on August 10 that lasts until the city finishes rewriting its zoning ordinance, expected to take 18 months to two years.
