Madison County is home to both of Amazon Web Services' first Mississippi data center campuses, one outside Canton and one in Ridgeland. As of June 2026 the Canton campus was the only one of Amazon's four announced Mississippi facilities in operation; Ridgeland, Clinton and Vicksburg were still in the works, Mississippi Today reported. An Amazon spokesperson, David Ross, told the outlet that the company had five buildings operating at Canton "with plans to at least double that presence," and that the Ridgeland site was "in the early stages of construction." Statewide, Amazon says it plans to invest $25 billion and create 2,000 jobs.
Money has become the main point of friction at the county level. Madison County has fee-in-lieu-of-taxes agreements with Amazon for both campuses, and part of the revenue is going toward repaying a $215 million state infrastructure loan tied to the data centers. Even so, the county's share is projected to climb to $16.5 million by 2029 and $29 million by 2031, the Mississippi Free Press reported. At an Aug. 17, 2026 meeting, the Board of Supervisors upheld Tax Assessor Norman Cannady's valuation of about $292 million for each of the five operating Canton buildings, rejecting Amazon's appeal, which put the value at about $69 million per building. The assessor's office estimated the lower figure would have cost the county $5.8 million in revenue this fiscal year. Cannady said Amazon had declined repeated requests for its construction costs: "They were not willing to share any of that with us." Amazon can still contest the valuation in court, and Cannady said the company could push for lower values in later years as more buildings come online.

Water for the campuses has been a recurring public question. Amazon said the Canton site currently draws cooling water from Canton Municipal Utilities and plans, with the contractor Veolia, to switch to recycled wastewater from the Madison County Wastewater Authority. A Veolia executive, Chris Low, estimated Canton would use about 83 million gallons of recycled wastewater a year. In Ridgeland, Amazon said it will use water only from the city system, up to about 93 million gallons a year, and that it is putting $37 million into that system. The company says it will use water for cooling only about 9% of the year and rely on air cooling the rest of the time. These figures come from the company and its contractor and have not been independently published.
The power arrangements are largely out of public view. Both campuses are served by Entergy Mississippi, and under a 2024 law passed in a special legislative session the Amazon-Entergy contract took effect without approval from the Public Service Commission, which is barred from altering its terms for the contract's full, undisclosed length. The law also lets Entergy begin recovering construction costs before facilities are in service and removes a 4% cap on annual rate increases tied to the Amazon spending. Entergy projects that by 2030 its rates will be 16% lower than they otherwise would have been, but, as Mississippi Today reported in June 2026, that claim cannot be checked because the contract is confidential. "It is the worst piece of legislation I think I have ever seen in my entire time watchdogging the utility industry," said Daniel Tait of the Energy & Policy Institute. Harvard's Ari Peskoe said, "I can't think of another state law passed by a legislature that exempts a specific contract from regulatory review."
