xAI Macrohardrr (Colossus 3) data center, Southaven, Mississippi

xAI is converting an 800,000 square foot warehouse on Stateline Road West in Southaven, DeSoto County, Mississippi, into a data center called MACROHARDRR, its third site in the greater Memphis area after Colossus 1 and Colossus 2. Governor Tate Reeves's office announced the project on January 8, 2026 as an investment of more than $20 billion, and xAI said it planned to begin operations there in February 2026. The data center draws power from gas turbines at a separate plant on Stanton Road that also powers the neighboring Colossus 2 site.

The Southern Environmental Law Center and Earthjustice, representing the NAACP, say the Stanton Road turbines were installed without an air permit and could emit more than 1,700 tons of nitrogen oxides a year, likely the largest industrial source in the Memphis area, from a plant half a mile from homes and a mile from an elementary school. "Our communities are not playgrounds for corporations who are chasing profit over people," said the NAACP's Abre' Conner. Mississippi signed off on a permanent plant of 41 turbines at the site in March 2026.

Three residents, Jason Haley, Preston Herrington and Taylor Logsdon, filed a class action in federal court in Oxford in June 2026 over turbine noise, on behalf of a class that could include more than 10,000 people. Their attorney, Robert Wright, said, "our homes are supposed to be a sanctuary for us against the world, but when they are invaded by noise 24 hours a day, it takes that fundamental peace of a good and decent life away from us." Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite said recent readings were in the 50 decibel range, below limits for an industrial zone.

In July 2026 xAI began removing all 69 turbines from the Stanton Road site, with the work due to finish by July 2027, replacing them with a permanent 1.2 gigawatt plant of 41 turbines. Mississippi's Department of Environmental Quality is requiring emissions tests on the 14 cleanest turbines and barred xAI from adding new turbines after July 15, 2026. The law center said that "while xAI claims it is 'rapidly removing' its unpermitted gas turbines in reality the company has been continually expanding adding nine new turbines in July bringing the total to 69." The noise lawsuit remains before the federal court in Oxford.
