Abilene is home to Stargate's first site, still under construction on the city's north side. Lancium owns the land and electrical infrastructure; Crusoe built the data centers for tenant Oracle and OpenAI. In March 2026, Crusoe's Jamie McGrath told city leaders the eight buildings underway total about 4 million square feet, with about 9,000 workers on site daily, and construction running through early 2027. That same month Crusoe announced a further 900-megawatt building next door for Microsoft, taking the planned campus toward 2.1 gigawatts of power.

Abilene gave Stargate an 85 percent tax abatement; Oracle says the city will still collect about $30 million a year. Taylor County commissioners approved a separate 20-year abatement. County Judge Phil Crowley defended it at a September 2, 2026 panel: "If people want counties that have control over data centers, you have to have an abatement because that is the only way you're going to have any authority otherwise."

The building boom has landed hardest on housing. Abilene Christian University said in June 2026 that more than 100 incoming students had nowhere to live, as rentals were bought up or turned into short-term rentals; the university reopened a residence hall slated for demolition. KUT reported average rents near $2,600 a month, up almost 50 percent in a year.

Michael Prado of the Abilene Hope Haven shelter said families were now arriving after eviction, and that some laid-off data center workers were calling him looking for a place to stay; placing a family used to take just over a month and now takes up to six. Resident Lexi Smith, whose family lives across the road from the site, said construction had brought traffic, damaged roads and worse water: "We got taken, we got robbed."
