Data centers in Montgomery County, Virginia: 1 project mapped
Montgomery County, home to Virginia Tech, has no large data center and none is proposed. Its only facility calling itself a data center is Brush Mountain Data Center, a colocation and hosted-computing business inside the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center in Blacksburg, run by Advanced Logic Industries. Blacksburg Town Manager Marc Vernier told Cardinal News it is not the sort of large stand-alone data center that has spread across Northern Virginia.
The county is writing rules before anyone arrives. In December 2025 supervisors asked the Planning Commission and staff to study data center siting and recommend zoning changes, since the current ordinance "does not define or allow data center facilities as a use," Cardinal News reported. In February 2026 the Planning Commission told The News Feed NRV that no proposals or zoning changes were under consideration. "Montgomery County probably doesn't draw much benefit from a data center, but it could be persuaded by promises of revenue," said Virginia Tech professor Margaret Cowell.

In Blacksburg, both candidates in a November 2026 Town Council special election told the Roanoke Times they opposed data centers in town. "I am wholly against them," said Leslie Harwood. Joel Goodhart said the town is "a little bit constrained on utilities that could possibly service a data center."
The pressure is coming from neighboring counties: Google has bought 312 acres in Botetourt County for three data centers, and Wythe, Pulaski, Appomattox, Campbell and Pittsylvania counties are all weighing proposals, WDBJ reported. No developer has been publicly linked to a site in Montgomery County, and the Planning Commission's zoning study is still underway.
