QTS Richmond 2 data center, Sandston, Virginia

QTS Richmond 2 is an 85-acre data center campus at 6030 to 6070 Technology Boulevard in Sandston, Henrico County, Virginia, one of three QTS campuses on that street. QTS says the site is master planned for five buildings, DC1 through DC3 plus DC5 and DC6, totaling 180 megawatts of power once complete; its closed-loop cooling needs only a one-time water fill rather than ongoing evaporative cooling.

Across Technology Boulevard, QTS is building its RIC4 campus, up to 10 more data center buildings on 478 acres it bought from the Henrico Economic Development Authority for $43.8 million in April 2024. QTS has asked the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to permit 370 more diesel emergency generators at its Henrico campuses, on top of 544 generators and 11 cooling towers already permitted; the company says these systems "are for emergency back-up purposes only and do not continuously run."

Residents of the neighboring Varina district have pressed for guarantees on air quality; at a June 2025 meeting with Varina Supervisor Tyrone Nelson, state regulators said they would work with Henrico to monitor emissions at QTS's nearby White Oak Technology Park campuses.

Henrico has required a provisional use permit for every new data center project in the county since 2025, and DEQ's air permits carry a mandatory 30-day public comment period before it decides on the extra generators QTS wants at its Henrico campuses.
