Vantage Quincy data center, Quincy, Washington

Vantage Data Centers finished its Quincy data center campus in Grant County, Washington, in October 2023, when it opened WA13, the third and last building on the 68-acre site. The campus now totals 89 megawatts of power across nearly 775,000 square feet, and Vantage says it has invested more than $1 billion there since entering Quincy in 2011.

Power comes from the Grant County Public Utility District, which runs two hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River, and Vantage credited the state's rural data center tax incentive with spurring the industry there. Grant County projected the Quincy area's 2024 assessed value at over $8 billion, more than half of it from data centers; Sabey, Yahoo, NTT, Microsoft and CyrusOne also run data centers in Quincy.

Quincy is a majority Hispanic farming community of about 7,500 people, and the tax money has paid for a new high school and hospital. Microsoft president Brad Smith has pointed to the town: "If you want to visit what's probably the nicest high school in the state of Washington, you don't go to the neighborhood where Microsoft's headquarters is based, you don't go next door to Amazon, you go to Quincy."

City Administrator Pat Haley has said hydropower and water in Grant County are maxed out, and the utility district has 79 pending applications in its queue, most of them for data centers. Former mayor Patty Martin said: "What about 10 years, 20 years from now, and these facilities are still here and the electrical grid, because now there's more people, there's more electric cars, there's not as much water running in the river because the snow packs aren't there."
