Data centers in Armstrong County, Texas: 1 project mapped
Armstrong County, a ranching county east of Amarillo, is getting a Google-tenant AI data center campus that Crusoe is building off Lima Road near Claude. Filed as Project Llano and also called the Goodnight campus, construction began in May 2025, and Google confirmed it would be the tenant in November 2025, part of a $40 billion Texas investment that also covers a campus in Haskell County. Filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation now show at least six buildings, four at 805,380 square feet and two at 484,955 square feet, set to go live in phases between August 2026 and February 2027.
The county's money comes through a tax abatement Crusoe asked commissioners to restructure in October 2025: instead of one lump sum per finished phase, the county now gets $1.35 million a year for each building as it opens. County Judge Adam Ensey said the total amount due would not change, and warned that an abatement guarantees nothing if a project is never built, pointing to wind farms that won abatements and were never constructed. The project is expected to employ 80 to 100 people.

Crusoe filed in January 2026 for a 933-megawatt natural gas plant on the campus that would power two of the buildings without connecting to the grid; its turbines could emit up to 4.5 million tons of carbon dioxide a year with no carbon capture, and Google has said it has not agreed to buy the plant's power. The research firm Aterio estimates the full campus at more than a gigawatt across seven buildings, a figure neither company has confirmed.
Residents' main worries are water, traffic and the ranches around the site. Crusoe and Ensey say the buildings use a closed-loop cooling system that, once filled, draws no more water from the aquifer than an office building's plumbing. At a Sept. 22 open house at Claude High School, Claude resident Elizabeth Magar said, "I feel like what is happening around me is taking away my ability to protect our ranch. It's our legacy." Google's Austin Hutchinson said the companies had added safety patrols at an intersection after concerns about students crossing near construction traffic.
