Goodnight data center, Claude, Texas

Crusoe is building the Goodnight data center campus, also called Project Llano, at 10001 Lima Road near Claude, in Armstrong County, Texas, just east of Amarillo. At a September 2026 open house for residents, Crusoe's Jeremy Bachrach said the campus will have six buildings, the first to be turned over to Google in early 2027 and construction finished by the end of that year. More than 7,500 employees and craft workers were on the site.

State filings list four buildings of 805,380 square feet and two of 484,955 square feet, filed under the Crusoe affiliate GN DC1, LLC; the two latest, Buildings 3 and 4, carry an estimated $500 million construction cost each. An Armstrong County tax-abatement agreement says the first phase may have four buildings drawing as much as 530 megawatts. Google has said it is developing a data center campus in Armstrong County as part of a $40 billion investment in Texas cloud and AI infrastructure through 2027. Google has committed to 50 permanent jobs once the campus is running, and figures shown at the open house put local tax revenue at more than $850 million over the life of the project, about $28 million a year.

Power is the sharpest question. In January 2026 Crusoe filed for a permit to build a 933-megawatt gas power plant on the campus that would run off the grid and power at least two of the buildings, and its application shows the plant could emit as much as 4.5 million tons of carbon dioxide a year, more than the city of San Francisco. Crusoe has applied to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for air permits for the Goodnight site, covering nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, particulate matter and greenhouse gases. A Google spokesperson said, "We don’t have a contract in place for the plant in Texas." At the September open house the companies said the site's primary power will come from the nearby Goodnight 1 and 2 wind farms, with the ERCOT grid as backup.

Bachrach said the campus uses closed-loop cooling that is filled once: "We fill that system up one time, and then that water recirculates for a period of about 15 years." Construction itself has used about 600,000 gallons a day during earthwork and foundations, expected to fall to about 275,000 as buildings are enclosed, and officials estimate each finished building will use about 2 million gallons a year, supplied by nearby neighbors. "We understand that this data center has had impacts on the community in terms of traffic and other impacts," Bachrach said. Claude ISD Superintendent Brent Kirkland said traffic and water remain concerns but the school stands to benefit, and that hearing from the companies directly helps: "if they’re the ones saying it, you can hold them accountable for that." In March 2026 a fire near the construction site forced a partial evacuation.

Crusoe is also developing a 1.4GW campus in Childress and the Abilene site used by OpenAI. On September 21 Gov. Greg Abbott told the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to issue no permits sought by data center projects until the ERCOT and Texas Water Development Board audits are complete.
