Data centers in Bastrop County, Texas: 2 projects mapped
Cedar Creek, an unincorporated community about 25 miles east of Austin, has more than 5,500 acres tied to three data center developers, Community Impact reported in July 2026. Because Texas counties have little zoning power, most of those projects need nothing from Bastrop County except, if they ask for one, a tax break, and that is where the fight has focused.
EdgeConneX is building a four-building, $1.4 billion campus at FM 535 and Wolf Lane for the AI cloud company CoreWeave; state filings cited by Community Impact put the first building, a $440 million, 578,000-square-foot data center, on track to open in the summer of 2026. The county granted a 10-year, 75% property tax abatement in December 2024, and the Texas comptroller certified the building for a 20-year state and local sales tax exemption. EdgeConneX plans a second campus of four more buildings at 6682 FM 535, each about 730,000 square feet and an estimated $700 million, with construction running to March 2029.

More than 100 people packed a Bastrop hotel on July 22 for a town hall, and many said they learned of the EdgeConneX project only after commissioners had already approved it, the Austin American-Statesman reported. "We chose Cedar Creek to build our homes, we have families, my six kids are supposed to be growing up in this area, next to a data center," resident Mary Santana said. Precinct 4 Commissioner David Glass said the raw land had been paying about $25,000 a year in property taxes and that the first campus would bring around $60 million to Bastrop ISD in its first year and $7 million to $8 million to the county, and argued that its closed-loop cooling uses little water.
A second, larger project has already pulled back. Pacifico Energy and BlackChamber Partners had proposed a 2,842-acre campus on Earl Callahan Road pairing a data center with 710 megawatts of natural gas-fired generation, but withdrew both a county and a school district tax abatement request by Aug. 19 after community pushback; "We withdrew our Chapter 312 and JETI applications because we heard the community clearly," Pacifico told KVUE. The Real Deal reported Anthropic is in talks to lease the site and was behind that decision. Commissioner Mark Meuth said withdrawing the tax breaks did not cancel the project or its permits.
A third company, Amazon Data Services, bought 1,229 acres nearby on May 1, land once planned for housing, but has told Community Impact it has made no final development decision.
On Aug. 10 commissioners tabled a resolution asking the Legislature for more county authority over development and set Aug. 24 to take it up again, KVUE reported; no report of that meeting has surfaced since.
