Data centers in Williamson County, Texas: 12 projects mapped
Williamson County's sharpest fight is over a project the city of Taylor says it cannot stop. Project Mustang, from South Dakota's Big Watt Digital and Virginia's PowerHouse Data Centers, would put at least two data centers and a 477-megawatt gas-fired power plant on 665 acres east of Taylor, between FM 112 and U.S. 79. Taylor had negotiated a voluntary annexation to hold the developer to rules on water, noise, air quality and drainage, but in August 2026 the city's planning and zoning commission paused approval for 90 days.
On September 3 the developers withdrew the annexation application and said they would build anyway: the site sits in Taylor's extraterritorial jurisdiction, where state law imposes no zoning. "Taylor currently has no authority to stop this project or regulate how it's developed," the city said, adding it also cannot collect property or sales tax from it.

Residents had already tried to force a vote. Halt Taylor Data Centers collected the 1,400 signatures needed for a petition seeking a moratorium, but the city council ruled that state law barred the measure from the initiative process or the ballot; the group has asked the Third Court of Appeals to order a vote. "Everything happens behind closed doors, then we're told to just trust" the city, organizer Carrie D'Anna told the Austin Free Press.
In Round Rock, Gary Oldham's group Protect Round Rock gathered 3,500 signatures against an AI data center planned near Old Settlers Park, but the city council signaled unanimous preliminary approval. In Jarrell, Prominent Property Group's Mesone Data Center, proposed on about 150 acres with access to 200 megawatts of gas and grid power, drew resident concern in September 2025; the planning and zoning commission recommended the rezoning for a city council vote on October 14, 2025, and no result has been published since.
Williamson County, in the Austin area, had 30 data centers operating or planned across nine campuses by June 2026, the Austin Free Press reported. The eight already running have a combined capacity of about 500 megawatts; at full build the county's total would be 1.6 to 1.9 gigawatts. Developers include Sabey, Switch, Skybox Datacenters, Iron Mountain, which plans seven buildings, and Blueprint Data Centers.
