Data centers in Ellis County, Texas: 8 projects mapped

Ellis County, south of Dallas, is home to Google's Midlothian campus, where Google first built in 2019 and has filed for a fifth building, and to a second Google campus taking shape in the Red Oak area. The newer fight is over Red Oak, where data centers are multiplying fast: in May 2026 the city council voted 4-1 to approve Compass Datacenters' roughly 830-acre campus, the sixth in the city. According to 60 Minutes, seven campuses there are set to cover more than a quarter of Red Oak's land.

Residents came to object to noise, pollution, falling property values and how close the site would sit to homes; one organizer said it would run along her own fence line. "We're supposed to look out for the welfare of our people ... but they're not really pausing and paying attention to what their people are saying," said organizer Elda Jazmin Villegas. Dozens of residents from across the political spectrum now meet twice a month to push back.

Compass has also turned to donations. Facing what its chief executive, Chris Crosby, called "noise" over the project, the company withdrew a proposed county tax abatement before a June 23 commissioners meeting, then gave the county $15 million for a new animal shelter and $12.6 million toward a Texas State Technical College building for data center training programs. "There is no strings attached," County Judge John Wray said. Waxahachie resident Susie Hall was not persuaded: "I hate to think that we're going to be obligated to Compass because there will be something they're going to want in return."
