Data centers in Frederick County, Virginia: 1 project mapped

Frederick County has one operating data center, the 6-megawatt Middletown Data Center on Valley Pike, but is now deciding whether to allow any more. The Board of Supervisors held public hearings on September 23, 2026 on an ordinance amendment that would remove data centers from every zoning district in the county, which would make Frederick the first Virginia locality to do so if it passes, and on a permit for Winchester Gateway, a 72-acre, three-building project in Kernstown. The hearings were scheduled for that date; no result has been published.

The push came from residents who filled meetings over water, noise, traffic and health, including a May 7 forum at James Wood High School that drew hundreds. The Planning Commission has recommended denying both pending projects: Equus Capital Partners' 220-acre Virginia Technology Park near Clear Brook, and Winchester Gateway, whose developer capped water use and added buffers but still would not say how many megawatts the site needs. Neither project has its own row in the county's table above yet.

County officials are fighting a proposed power line too, setting aside $250,000 to oppose Valley Link's planned Valley North transmission route, which could cross Frederick and neighboring Clarke County. "We're not a highway. This has got to stop," board chairman John Jewell said. Three sitting supervisors, including Jewell, face independent anti-data-center challengers in November special elections.
