Data centers in Greensville County, Virginia: 1 project mapped

Greensville County lost two prospective data center customers in the spring of 2026. State Finance Secretary Mark Sickles told a Senate committee that Compass Datacenters had stopped looking at sites in Greensville County and Emporia because of uncertainty over Virginia's data center sales-tax exemption; Compass did not say what size projects it had considered. Gov. Abigail Spanberger said the loss "hurts local revenues" and "hurts local services." The General Assembly's eventual compromise kept the tax exemption but added a new energy-consumption tax on data centers.

The county's one project on record, the Mid-Atlantic Advanced Manufacturing Center near Emporia, is a separate, still-proposed industrial site; it is not the Compass project described above, and its backers have not said whether a data center is part of its plans. Officials point to Greensville's 6.6 percent unemployment rate, Emporia's 8.8 percent, and the closed Georgia-Pacific plywood mill as reasons they keep recruiting. "You're talking down in my neck of the woods, a lot of communities are struggling to get by," said Keith Boswell of the Virginia Gateway Region economic development group, who said five data center projects were interested in the region.
