Data centers in Surry County, Virginia: 1 project mapped

In 2024 Surry County approved a data center, hydrogen fuel and small nuclear reactor campus called the Surry Green Energy Center, but nothing has been built there since. Green Energy Partners, a Middleburg developer, secured about 600 acres off Hog Island Road next to Dominion Energy's Surry nuclear plant for 19 data centers, a hydrogen plant and eventually four to six small modular reactors; supervisors approved the rezoning 3-2 on February 8, 2024, with Amy Drewry and Timothy Calhoun voting no.

Seven months later, in September 2024, Green Energy Partners filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, listing more than $3 million in unsecured claims from 10 creditors. Drewry said "too many times, Surry County makes decisions on verbal promises that are not legally enforceable, which is risky when a company goes out of business or is sold." A 2022 contract to buy the land for $12 million was reassigned in February 2025 to a new entity, Surry Green Energy Center LLC, at a price rising 10% a year until closing; the developer's attorney called the bankruptcy "a reorganization, not a liquidation."

In June 2026 the local group Keep Surry Rural signed a statewide letter asking Governor Abigail Spanberger to end Virginia's sales tax exemption for data centers, which it says cost the state $1.9 billion in 2025. No construction or tenant has been reported at the Surry site since.
