Data centers in Wise County, Virginia: 1 project mapped

Wise County's existing data center is Mineral Gap, a 65,000-square-foot facility built by DP Facilities on 22 acres of the county's Lonesome Pine Business and Technology Park. It opened in April 2017 as a $65 million project aimed at federal and state government agencies as well as commercial clients, backed by a $350,000 grant from the Virginia Tobacco Commission; a 3.5-megawatt solar farm on a former coal mine helps power it.

A much larger project is now proposed for the same park. In February 2026 Cardinal News reported plans for the Wise Innovation Hub, about 2 million square feet of data center space in nine buildings, built in phases over roughly 10 years and powered by an on-site natural gas plant. Red Post Energy, a Houston-based power producer, signed a letter of intent in December 2025 to design the generation. CEO Lance Medlin said the first 100 megawatts or so could come online in about three years and eventually scale to 500 or 600 megawatts, with 20% to 30% of the output going back to the grid. Brian Falin, the county's industrial development director, said he did not expect heavy water use and that taxes from each building could bring $3 million to $5 million a year: "We're not going to rush this," he said.

The gas plan, nicknamed the "Maverick Project," has drawn criticism. Appalachian Voices wrote in March 2026 that residents who had repeatedly asked the board of supervisors for more transparency learned about it from a LinkedIn post instead, and that the developers have indicated a desire to partner with the gas pipeline company Enbridge on the project's power supply.
