Data centers in Bexar County, Texas: 13 projects mapped

Data centers have clustered on San Antonio's far West Side around Westover Hills, where the city gave Microsoft a 10-year property tax break in 2007. Vantage Data Centers held its first public hearing, on May 28, 2026, on an air permit for a three-story building at 5207 Rogers Road; company officials told the crowd it is already built and partly operating, backed by 65 diesel generators, while a separate Vantage site on Omicron Drive has 86. Neighbors packed the hearing over noise and light.

San Antonio is writing rules that would confine data centers to industrial and commercial zones, keep them at least 500 feet from homes, schools and hospitals, and ban them from the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone; a project that doesn't fit would need a council vote. The city's Zoning Commission was set to finish the rules by the end of September, with a possible council vote in October, while members also weighed a separate 180-day moratorium. "Data centers are one of the largest, fastest-growing threats to our communities," said Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez.

Water is a sharp worry in a region facing long-term drought. A San Antonio Water System analysis found the city's Microsoft and Army Corps data centers used a combined 463 million gallons of water in 2023 and 2024, while residents were held to once-a-week lawn watering. CPS Energy has told its board these large customers already draw about 324 megawatts and could need roughly 2,700 more by 2028, against a total portfolio of about 7,246 megawatts.
