Data centers in Denton County, Texas: 5 projects mapped

The city of Denton is the center of data center activity in Denton County, and in 2026 it became one of several North Texas cities moving to slow new projects. Denton already hosts two data centers approved by the council in 2024 and 2026: Core Scientific's AI data center, which KERA and the Denton Record-Chronicle reported in August 2026 was nearing full buildout for up to 391 megawatts and leases its capacity to CoreWeave, and a smaller modular facility from QumulusAI, granted a permit on January 13, 2026 and contracted for up to 20 megawatts. Elsewhere in the county, CyrusOne runs smaller operating sites in Carrollton and Lewisville, T5 Data Centers has a site in Fort Worth, and Citigroup operates the Cornerstone Southwest data center in Roanoke.

On August 4, 2026, a 4-3 Denton council majority directed staff to pursue both a temporary moratorium on new data centers and permanent changes to the city's development code. Under a 2025 state law, the city must hold two public hearings and win a supermajority vote to impose such a pause; the moratorium would run 90 days, extendable to 180. Denton Municipal Electric's general manager, Antonio Puente, said the city's transmission system is already near capacity and that anything above 75 megawatts "is likely beyond the capacity that we have today." At the first hearing in September, all 20 speakers supported a moratorium, some wanting it longer or a ban.

A second hearing is set for October 27, 2026, with final consideration expected in early December. "What do these data centers bring to our community? If the only answer is money, then essentially they are giving us nothing in exchange for our resources," resident Seth Fuller said.
